Gain insights into the history of this house and property by learning about its original owners, John and Annie Balsley. Originally from New York and Pennsylvania, the couple acquired 142 acres of land in Florida in 1878 through a state grant. Thanks to their successful citrus crop, John and Annie Balsley achieved significant wealth.
The marriage of Annie and John grew increasingly unhappy over time. Despite achieving success and wealth on September 27, 1893, Annie took her own life after shooting her husband while he slept. In a suicide note left on the bedroom door facing the porch, she stated "I can't bear it any longer."
Surprisingly, one year later "The Great Freeze" caused significant damage to citrus crops in central Florida. As a result, Frank Balsley, the adopted son, and his wife Ida relocated to Pinellas County. In 1910, suffering from depression and poor health, Frank tried to take his own life. Sadly, he passed away 20 days later in the hospital after suffering a heart attack while recovering from his self-inflicted injuries.
The Balsley house has retained its original structure throughout the years, with a nearby "City Church" now possessing a portion of the land and the property. Presently, the church is refurbishing the historic home for utilization as their headquarters. To uphold its heritage, the city church intends to maintain the majority of the original home.
This historic farmhouse in Sanford, Florida has been featured in national newspapers under the headline "Marriage a failure." Despite its chilling past, this property still stands strong as one of the oldest structures in the area and holds a significant place in history as the former crossing point of the longest narrow-gauge railway in the USA. In fact, this structure has withstood the test of time, making it a valuable piece of history.
